The 911PROGRAMS Oral Endotracheal Intubation program is a skill-based EMS course.  Upon successful completion of this program (which includes written and practical examinations), graduates (once they receive a certificate from the RI Division of EMS) are able to perform Oral Endotracheal Intubation according to according to the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Prehospital Care Protocols and Standing Orders.

Students taking our Paramedic & Cardiac Programs receive FREE enrollment in our ET Intubation course

Definitive airway management

The endotracheal tube is the airway of choice for definitive airway management.  Not only can an intubation-certified EMT ventilate apneic patients through an ET tube, they can also administer medications and use direct laryngoscopy to remove foreign body airway obstructions (FBAOs).

 ORAL ENDOTRACHEAL INTUBATION CERTIFICATION

Certification Testing Procedure

Prior to moving on to manikin practice:

  • Students first demonstrate proficiency in basic airway management (particularly ventilating with a bag-valve-mask)

  • Pass the 50-question written exam (70% or better)

Following 8 hours of manikin practice, students will be evaluated on their ability to safely intubate patients according to the psychomotor (skill) sheet.  Students who successfully pass all portions of the course will be issued a certificate of completion and their names will be forwarded to the Rhode Island Division of EMS who will issue Authorization to Practice cards.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES - EMTs AUTHORIZED TO PERFORM ORAL ENDOTRACHEAL INTUBATION

Career boosting

Many fire departments and most EMS and ambulance services require that their EMTs be certified in Oral Endotracheal Intubation.  Because of the time and money it costs to train employees, employers often look favorably on individuals who are already certified.
