EOA/MAST UPDATES ARE SCHEDULED ON AN AS-NEEDED BASIS
GENERAL INFORMATION - EOA / MAST
Overview
Use of esophageal obturator airways (EOA) and pneumatic anti-shock garments aka medical anti-shock trousers (PASG / MAST) is part of the standard curriculum for EMT-Basic training in some states. Rhode Island is one such state. EMTs from states that do not incorporate those skills (such as Massachusetts and New Jersey) who want to become licensed as an EMT in Rhode Island must take an EOA/MAST update course from a licensed Instructor/Coordinator.
The 911PROGRAMS EOA / MAST Update program provides a comprehensive yet succinct way to complete this requirement. Upon successful completion of this program (which includes written and practical examinations), graduates are eligible to apply for licensure in Rhode Island.
Please click the EMT-Basic link at the left for more information about certification and licensure as a Rhode Island EMT-Basic including links to important Division of EMS documents.
Authority to Conduct EMS Training in Rhode Island
Only individuals licensed by the RI Department of Health may serve as the Instructor-Coordinator for EMT training programs in Rhode Island. Instructor-Coordinators may conduct EMS training programs up to the level of his/her licensure. William Howe (President, 911PROGRAMS) is a licensed paramedic and licensed instructor-coordinator in Rhode Island - license number 5453-P.
COURSE DESCRIPTION - EOA / MAST UPDATE
Curriculum Design
The Rhode Island Division of EMS publishes for instructor-coordinators Guidelines for Conducting EMS Courses. This document outlines the minimum requirements and standards to conduct EMS training in Rhode Island. Additionally, required lesson plan content must cover the course (behavioral) objectives listed in the 1994 US Department of Transportation EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum AND the 2002 Supplemental Airway Modules for the 1994 Emergency Medical Technician - Basic: NSC. The RI EOA / MAST Update curriculum, as outlined in the Guidelines to conduct EMS courses, does not reference a minimum number of hours. Instructor-coordinators are permitted to alter the course design, schedule, and content - including increasing the number of hours and content as the I/C deems fit so long as the course meets the minimum standards set forth.
The 911PROGRAMS EOA / MAST Curriculum
The course curriculum may differ from program to program to suit the needs of the student and provide a comprehensive educational experience. The course hours and content always exceeds the minimum state and national standards as does the instructor to student ratio. Please refer to individual training program syllabuses for more detailed information.
Course hours, schedule, and cost
The didactic portion is about 8 hours but may be increased based on the needs of the students.
A typical update course looks like this:
Lecture: Airway Management & Ventilation (3 hours)
Lab Session and Testing (1 hour)
Lecture: Shock (3 hours)
Lab Session and Testing (1 hour)
EOA / MAST courses are handled as tutoring sessions. Please see the course policy on tutoring in the "ABOUT" section of this website. EOA / MAST training is part of our EMT-Basic courses. EOA / MAST applicants may sit in on a running EMT course if one is available. The cost to sit in on a running program is $80. If no running EMT-Basic course is available in the time frame that the EOA / MAST applicant desires, we can set up a private session for one or more students. The cost for this is reflected in the tutoring policy. Note: Active members in good standing of URI EMS are not charged for EOA / MAST updates.
Course Delivery Method
911PROGRAMS Didactic lessons are delivered almost entirely by powerpoint presentation with accompanying handouts which are available in our exclusive online classroom. Other forms of instruction include overhead projection of materials, written information on a dry erase board, video presentations, actual case presentations, as well as scenarios and hands-on practice. The laboratory portion will be delivered in a more informal setting using hands-on practice with equipment and a student:instructor ratio of no greater than 5:1.
