PARAMEDIC REFRESHER COURSE R16
GENERAL INFORMATION - PARAMEDIC REFRESHER
Overview
The 911PROGRAMS Paramedic Refresher program satisfies the paramedic refresher requirements of the National Registry of EMTs and follows the DOT 2001 guidelines for conduct of paramedic refreshers - which also satisfies the re-licensure requirements for the Rhode Island Division of EMS for paramedics. Upon successful completion of this program (which includes written and practical examinations), graduates are awarded a certificate of completion.
Alternatively, instead of a state refresher (which follows the DOT curriculum), we occasionally offer paramedic 'refreshers' based on the Mandatory and Flexible Core Content for training in lieu of formal refreshers as outlined in the refresher brochure of the National Registry of EMTs. In this case, there is no course approval number; the graduates are instead issued a certificate of completion indicating completion of all the components as outlined in the NREMT brochure. In accordance with the NREMT guidelines, the ACLS refresher (which paramedics need anyway) is substituted for the Airway/Breathing/Cardiology component.

COURSE DESCRIPTION - PARAMEDIC REFRESHER
Curriculum Design
The Rhode Island Division of EMS publishes for instructor-coordinators Guidelines for Conducting EMS Refresher Courses. This document outlines the minimum requirements and standards to conduct EMS training in Rhode Island. The refresher program must be conducted in accordance with the2001 EMT-Paramedic National Standard Curriculum Refresher Course and the refresher requirements of the National Registry of EMTs. The RI Division of EMS publishes no additional standards. Instructor-coordinators are permitted to alter the course design, schedule, and content - including increasing the number of hours and content as the I/C deems fit so long as the course meets the minimum standards set forth.
The 911PROGRAMS Paramedic Refresher Curriculum
The course curriculum may differ from program to program to suit the needs of the student and provide a comprehensive educational experience. The course hours and content always exceeds the minimum state and national standards as does the instructor to student ratio. Please refer to individual training program syllabuses for more detailed information. The DOT curriculum may be accessed by this link: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/ems/ems2001/Paramedic.htm

Course Delivery Method
911PROGRAMS Didactic lessons are delivered almost entirely by powerpoint presentation with accompanying handouts which are available in our exclusive online classroom. Other forms of instruction include overhead projection of materials, written information on a dry erase board, video presentations, actual case presentations, as well as scenarios and hands-on practice. Prior to completion of the course, the student must observe at least 5 patient assessments in a clinical setting. The laboratory portion will be delivered in a more informal setting using hands-on practice with equipment and a student:instructor ratio of no greater than 5:1.
