What does a medical coding and billing specialist do?
Medical billing and coding is an important part of the business operation of any hospital, private physician's office, or other medical facility. When patients have any type of medical visit, the services they receive are coded and entereed into a computer system where an invoice is generated and sent to the patient. The staff of the medical coding and billing department keeps the doors open by keeping the money coming in. Those employed in medical billing and coding must sort and file a great deal of paperwork. The medical billing and coding staff regularly handles all types of insurance claims, including private, Medicare and insurance fraud. Working in medical billing and coding involves handling confidential patient files and medical records on a daily basis and requires employees to be professional and discreet. Collections is sometimes also a responsibility of the medical coding and billing department.
Employment Opportunties
Once you are certified in Medical Coding and Billing, you'll have a variety of employment opportunities. Hospitals employ a large number of medical coding and billing workers as do other large medical facilities. Private doctor's offices and clinics also offer job opportunities in medical codind and billing, along with nursing homes, home health care businesses, and some government agencies.
Medical Coding and Billing Salaries
A July 2009 survey by payscale.com reports that the medan starting salary for a beginning medical coding and billing specialist is about $12.20 per hour. What is the job potential for phlebotomists right now?
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment outlook is expected to grow much faster than average. Job prospects should be very good. Technicians with a strong understanding of technology and computer software will be in high demand. Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 20%, much faster than average for all occupations through 2018. Employment growth will result from the increase in the number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be performed. As the population continues to age, the occurrence of health-related problems will increase. Cancer registrars should experience job growth as the incidence of cancer increases from an aging population. In addition, with the increasing use of electronic health records, more technicians will be needed to complete the new responsibilities associated with electronic data management.
